What I Do

I thought I would discuss briefly what I do. Currently, I am a member/owner of a company called Rent My DN . The company has a rather nice sized portfolio of domain names .
My main project at this time is redoing Rent My DN's Homesite. The first one is very static. The new version is being designed with PHP and MySql.

Another thing I am learning how to do is SEO or Search Engine Optimization. I have come along way since I started webmastering. PHP scripts are the greatest thing to me. I love how easy it use to utilize a database.

I have finally got my project management script up and running. If you are interested in taking a peak of the project (there is nothing there yet but will be soon) you can go to : Social Business Project (user: guest pword: guest). Some information of course is private and will not be available to you (unless you are on the project team (if you are interested in becoming a part of it email me at admin@communalbusiness.net

In one of my next posts I will be introducing some of our staff, as well as what their role in the project is (I will plug their other projects for them as well). If you know how to program please contact me if you want to work on a potential project.

Social Business Idea

Social Business Idea

Thanks for taking the time to read this. Essentially what I have in mind is creating a social business site. What exactly do I have in mind? With the popularity of social networking, social bookmarking and other social type sites, I think its time to cash in on web development online. How can we do this? Honestly I am not 100% sure yet. That is why I have tried to gather a few people interested in helping to pioneer this idea with me. I know I can not do everything I hope for on my own. I welcome your assistance.

Social Business: How I see it

With the popularity of domaining going up, the web is just filled with boring parked sites. If you are going to purchase a domain can you can at least develop it out a little for your viewers. Something that crosses my mind when I see parked sites.

What if there was a site I could submit my project to to have it developed? There are several freelance web designers available. So that is not a unique idea in itself. What about a social enterprise? Where everyone with something to contribute to a project will get paid for helping. There could be paid for projects (like a company has already agreed to have a site developed. Once the project is done anyone who contributed to the development of the site gets a profit share. In addition to that option there is an entrepreneurial approach i have in mind. What I hope is we will get people from all around the world that have something to contribute. Lets say for example 5 people are matched up:

An online collaboration where those involved get paid. We have one main site and people can submit project ideas for a certain site (as well as people contributing resources (domain names,hosting,investment/capital, etc) Like I mentioned everyone gets paid out dependent upon what they do. So let say we only get 5 people on the first project (this is an example). Each one states their skills when they sign up (or update) for their profile/account. They can then join various projects in the work. I can picture several sites could be worked on at one time once this gets going to make more revenue. So those 5 people:

Billy: blogger/content
Bob: programming - makes a script to help set up the companies home site. server/application admin
Lisa: Seo/Marketing
Matt: a founder of "some widget company" where he has a large amount of "widgets" he wants to sell through the site
Greg: has a good domain name and hosting for the business in mind

So lets say the site generated 5000$ US in revenue. There would be a formula set up for who gets how much for contributing. Also when I say contributing I do not just mean working on a site. I mean contributing goods or services for sale.

I can envision a "pool" of social business entrepreneurs ready to start development.

As for the entrepreneurial approach, think about this: What if you were one of the developers for a site such as myspace.com or whateverlife.com? If the site set up is an entrepreneurial effort (it was from scratch and everything was contributed by members)then if the site gets sold or 10 million $ gets made then we all get a piece of the pie.

What we need programming wise

So what I envision is a site with a simple sign up approach (such as a typical social network or even a site like stumbleupon.com) One central profile for a user. It would contain your basic information such as: pictures, about, etc. Also member messaging and chat. In addition to that you would have to fill out a form with extra information to be included on any developmental projects. This information will be retrievable via a search. It will aid in finding someone to match up with for development. I wonder if for early projects some kind of portfolio should be submitted for review.

As for developmental aspects I see a user friendly file checkout area, developmental tools (coding, html, photo editing tools, etc etc) being available via c-panel like interface.

Another important feature that is needed is a contribution/pay out system. How do we determine who gets how much? Thats a good question I think and it definitely needs some brainstorming and feedback. I have found (one so far in my searches) a business doing something remotely similar: http://opensrcbusiness.com However they deal with software development. Please check them out for some ideas.

I know this sounds almost grandiose but it is very possible. I think a lot of this can be set up with a small pool of people, to pioneer it. For now I have the domains: Social Business Project (self registration will be an option shortly when i get all the new info I want there uploaded) and Social Business Project Blog If by chance you think of any better names please please either email me the idea, or purchase the domain yourself. I have plenty of coupon codes available to obtain domain names at a cheaper price, so do let me know.

Conclusion

I welcome any ideas and assistance you can provide. If there is anyone you know that can help with the start up aspects of this site please feel free to share information with them as well as pass them my email address. As far as instant messaging I use google talk with the same email address: biggityb78 at gmail.com. I will have something up shortly at the communal business sites I noted above. Also I need some one to assist me in writing a technical requirements for paper for this project. Thanks for your time in reading this and I look forward to working with you.

My Intro to Programming

I have only been learning visual basic and PHP/MySql since August 2007. I am a quick learner. A good example: when I become involved in a project back in in 2002. The Corporation Division was taking their business start up coop (6 state agencies were involved ) Business Information Center online. Originally, it was 3 people answering phone calls regarding business start up. We were trained every aspect of state business regulations, start up assistance, and our key service: providing customized business start up packets (tailored to the specific customer's call).

The Corporation Division's solution to this overwhelming expense (just to send out a packet via US Mail alone was $3). I became involved since I was one of the best call center employees (I answered phone calls from 3 different phone lines: Business Registry, Business Information Center - BIC and the Secretary of State's own Executive Line) . BIC's database was a Filemaker Pro (6 I think) DB. I had to combine the information based upon certain situations I experienced on the phone with 2002 NAICS codes into an Excel 2000 spreadsheet, so that the programmers could then migrate it into the new database (Oracle DB).

I attended alot of meetings with the project manager, the application administrator (also a former boss), agency manager, and programmers. It was a very educational experience for me.

I read plenty of requirement papers for development of software while working for the Corporation Division. I am waiting to see whether I can put out a good document for you guys to read. You will know soon. My current project Social Business just started up. I will be constantly posting here, while I am in the early stages of putting my idea into words.

Its only been since August 2007 that I have taken the time to learn about PHP Programming. Since then I have went from setting up websites with a script some examples: Online Arcade Site , and a real estate directory. I have taken the time to understand how each file works with others in the script. I will have some of the projects I have made posted on here in the near future.

My Idea

Last month I had an interesting idea. You know how they come to you, just out of the blue. I would say that is exactly how it happened in this case. I wrote up a little note of ideas included in my brainstorm. In the end my idea came out to be best described in the following words: Online Social Business or Online Communal Business. Essentially what I see is an online community involved in building websites and coming up with resources to launch a site with the help of others online. The key to this is every one contributing on certain projects would get paid for it. I envision the idea of people contributing other resources (material goods to contribute for sale, services, etc, etc) for sale.

At this time I am looking for people with talents within my daily contacts on the web. If anyone is interested you are more than welcome to introduce yourself here and I will contact you. I also have another site containing the actually project information (I will always post there first with information before this blog).

About Me:
I am a hard worker. I have become a Member of Rent My DN, LLC and have been setting up websites, learning PHP and MySql, and learning the domaining industry (also learning how to run a for profit site...my last go at a webmaster was a nonprofit venture).

I worked for the Oregon Secretary of State Corporation Division from 1999-2003. I have an extensive knowledge of business regulations, government agencies, business entities, and computers.

What I am Looking for:

I need someone who can program. I am not the best programmer. I will be posting some of my experiences shortly. Also I am looking for feedback from any readers. I will be posting a link to my project (I am using Dot Project as a web based project manager) with guest access for that are interested in obtaining more information.

Thanks again for taking the time to read this. I really need some help. I have a good idea but I just do not have the necessary knowledge at this time to design what I have in mind.
